Already, we know quite a bit about the series. At the top end, the Arc Alchemist flagship has 512 EUs and 16 GB of GDDR6, and then there are at least two smaller models with 256 and 128 EUs and correspondingly smaller amounts of memory. Before today, Intel GPUs had been seen at speeds of up to 2.1 GHz. But this morning, a handy Twitter bot found a new OpenCL benchmark entry from the 512 EU model and it had a peak frequency of exactly 2....

We’ve had access to several new Z490 boards and only Asus seems to adhere to these limits with MSI, Asrock and Gigabyte all running without power limits with only one or two exceptions on mATX and Mini-ITX boards. That being the case, the typical out of the both experience won’t be power limited and therefore we’ll be testing the Core i5-10400 on a Z490 board with no TDP restrictions in place....

Against the the quad-core Core i5 750 processor, the Core i5 661 was around 22% slower. Testing read/write performance with EVEREST Ultimate Edition, we see again impressive bandwidth results from the Core i5 661, despite of trailing behind the Core i5 750.

Although the Unreal Tournament 3 results at 1920x1200 placed little difference between the slowest and fastest processors tested, the 1024x768 results were more interesting to compare CPU performance. The Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 managed 225fps, the AMD Phenom II X4 965 fired off 263fps. Then the Core i5 750 was able to average 268fps, making it slightly slower than the 273fps of the Core i7 920. At 1024x768 the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 managed 183fps in Street Fighter IV which would sound impressive if the Phenom II X4 965 wasn’t scoring a whole lot better at 226fps....

This isn’t the only Core i7 processor in Intel’s Comet Lake line-up. There are a few other options including the new 8-core Core i7-10875H that we reviewed a few weeks ago, but judging by previous generations, anything above the 10750H will typically be restricted to premium options, while the Core i5s you see here - which amazingly are still quad cores - are destined for the most basic entry-level designs....

The i7-3720QM rendered an average of 9.67fps in SolidWorks, 2% faster than the FX-6100 and 9% faster than the i7-2600K. Meanwhile, it was just 7% slower than the i7-3770K, which is impressive given that it’s clocked 25% lower. The i7-3720QM averaged 14.49fps in Maya, which was roughly as fast as the Core i7-3820 and just 7% slower than the i7-3770K. The CINEBENCH R11.5 CPU benchmark saw the i7-3720QM provide the same results as the i7-2600K despite being clocked 24% lower, and it was only 15% behind the i7-3770K....

Nothing for the Core i3 range has been announced yet, which is unlike Intel. It is also unlike Intel to come out with such a staggered release. By which we mean you still can’t really get your hands on a new Core i7 or Core i5 processor yet. In fact, availability isn’t supposed to improve until sometime in August. So with just two socketed Broadwell CPUs on offer, what can consumers expect?...

The Core i7-6700K matched the performance of the 4790K when encoding with HandBrake, allowing for 355fps. This isn’t exactly progress but at least it wasn’t slower. The Core i7-6700K was just 2% slower than the 4790K when comparing 4K encoding performance with Hybrid. As we have come to expected the Core i7-6700K delivered similar performance to the 4790K, this time when testing with the x264 HD Benchmark. Finally, we once again find the i7-6700K delivering 4790K-level performance, this time when encoding with Video Master Works....

Today is all about real-world performance as we had already covered the 12900K’s specifications, for all that goodness check out our Alder Lake preview here. The Core i9-12900K is an interesting beast, packing 8 performance cores along with 8 efficient cores for a total of 24 threads, which seems like a strange number and that’s because those efficient or “E-cores” don’t support Hyper-Threading. The P-Cores clock up to 5.2 GHz with the E-Cores limited to 3....

For those unfamiliar, Intel follows a “tick tock” model for its processor upgrade cycle. With every “tick” the company moves to a smaller manufacturing process, from 32nm to 22nm in this case, dramatically increasing transistor density while enhancing performance and energy efficiency of the current microarchitecture. Then, with an alternating “tock” cycle Intel introduces a new processor microarchitecture. Ivy Bridge includes manufacturing and subsystem improvements. It is a shrink of Sandy Bridge and is also the first to us Intel’s Tri-Gate transistors, which use a nonplanar architecture to cram more transistors into less space, therefore consuming less power or delivering more performance within the same power envelope....

Intel recently announced that it’s splitting its Accelerated Computing Group (AXG) in two to focus better on the consumer and data center graphics markets. Raja Koduri, AXG’s founder, will once again be Intel’s Chief Architect to coordinate the CPU, GPU, and AI divisions. The group’s consumer graphics team – in charge of the Intel Arc discrete graphics cards – will join Intel’s Client Computing Group. The accelerated computing teams will join the data center and AI group – another important enterprise-side market for graphics processing....

Supermicro is hoping that its strong brand name in the server space will help push their products into the consumer market. This makes sense and it is probably why consumer brands such as Gigabyte make a lot of noise about their server grade “Black Series” server quality motherboards. This tiny drive packs eight 8GB NAND flash chips for a total capacity of 64GB. Unlike SandForce-based drives however, the SSDNow V+180 can effectively use the full capacity for user storage. The SandForce SF-1200 controller has to set aside a percentage of the NAND flash memory for its DuraWrite technology, but the Toshiba T6UG1XBG controller has no such requirement. The SandForce SF-1200 controller does this because it doesn’t incorporate a cache buffer....

We are also provided with an install of InterVideo WinDVD 8 for use with the optical drive, and Lenovo’s ThinkVantage Toolbox, which is a suite of programs that cover things like system health, security, networking and diagnostics. As legacy mandates Lenovo includes a dedicated keyboard button for launching the latter program. Lenovo’s custom power management program, Power Manager 3, is also included and set to a medium power / energy saving profile by default – which I promptly changed to high performance....

Obviously the big talking point here is the increase in resolution from 1920 x 1080, which has been the standard for over a year, to 2560 x 1440. On a typical 5.0-inch smartphone this equates to a 33% jump from 440 PPI to 587 PPI, corresponding to the 78% jump in pixel count. In comparison, going from 720p (294 PPI at 5-inches) to 1080p was a 50% jump in density with a 125% rise in pixel count....
