Elvin Hu, a designer for Google Chrome, showed off the new logo and revealed some of the thinking behind its design on Twitter. The overall shape and the red, yellow, green, and blue colors remain the same, though the blue circle in the middle is now a little larger. Another change is that the shadows sitting near the borders between each color have been removed. That makes the logo appear slightly flatter, but it does look more vibrant as a result....

Google introduced OSV-Scanner this week, a free tool that lets developers making open-source software scan for known vulnerabilities in the dependencies they use. The scanner checks their projects against Google’s Open Source Vulnerability (OSV) schema and the OSV.dev service. When developers run OSV-Scanner on their work, it searches their manifests, SBOMs, and commit hashes to find transitive dependencies. It then links the information it finds to Google’s OSV database to find vulnerabilities and inform the developers....

The two handsets already have a public product page on the Google Store complete with a handful of teaser photos and product rendering videos. Judging by the photos alone, the rear camera array almost looks flush with the rest of the rear panel. The video reveals this isn’t the case, however, as the camera strip is visibly elevated like a mini plateau. Speaking of the rear camera array, the standard Pixel 7 features twin camera lenses alongside an LED flash and a tiny microphone hole....

In lab testing, Corning said Victus 2 survived drops of up to one meter on a surface replicating concrete. Competing aluminosilicate glasses from other manufacturers typically failed when dropped from half a meter or less, Corning noted. Victus 2 is also said to have survived drops up to two meters on a smoother surface replicating asphalt. Cover glass is not as big of a selling point for mobile devices as it once was but it is still an important part of the overall package....

Backblaze has kept records for most of the hard drives used in its cloud storage business. Since 2009, the San Mateo-based corporation purchased 265,332 HDDs and kept meticulous records of each one. As recently revealed by Andy Klein on the company’s official blog, in 2009 the average cost per gigabyte was $0.11. In 2017 during the first review of the cost of hard disks, Backblaze was spending just $0.03 per gigabyte....

After a long 22 month wait, AMD re-released the HD 7970 as the R9 260X (aka ‘Tahiti XT2’), though the newer card actually offered less performance as it came with a slightly slower clock speed that ultimately reduced the fill rate from 32 to 27.2GP/s. AMD showed its final Radeon 200 series graphics card a year later, but neither the price nor the performance of the R9 285 ‘Tonga Pro’ was noteworthy....

The HIS Radeon HD 6870 IceQ X Turbo X Crossfire configuration used 9% more power under load than standard 6870 Crossfire cards. With a load consumption of 465 watts, the HD 6870 IceQ X Turbo X Crossfire cards consumed 2% less power than the dual-GPU Radeon HD 6990. Meanwhile, the HIS Radeon HD 6850 IceQ X Turbo Crossfire configuration provided a total system power consumption of 408 watts, which was 7% more than the standard 6850 Crossfire cards under load....

We recently tested many of the Windows-based media converters listed at the top of search results for queries such as “MP4 to MP3 converter,” only to discover that virtually all of them have limited licenses without paying for the full program. The main issue with most of these applications being that the trial editions could only convert files a few minutes long or a few megabytes in size – useless for our purpose of converting lengthy audio clips from YouTube....

In both our benchmarks and real-world usage, the Spectre x360 lasted long enough for a solid day’s work. It outperformed the two other Kaby Lake laptops I’ve reviewed - the Asus ZenBook 3 and Razer Blade Stealth - by a small but significant margin, although in our new calibrated Wi-Fi test, the x360 only narrowly outperformed the ZenBook 3 in a surprise result. I think most buyers will be very satisfied with the battery life provided by the x360, especially as the battery is large without adding a significant amount of bulk to the system....

In a livestream today, Huawei announced the global availability of their newest flagship foldable smartphone and a multitude of wearables. The company first launched these devices in China earlier this year, but now they’re coming to western markets, starting with Europe. The Mate Xs 2 is Huawei’s first new foldable since the P50 Pocket. It packs a massive 7.8-inch OLED screen (2480 x 2200 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate) that folds outwards, unlike competitors such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3....

At CES 2023, HyperX is previewing a range of personalized keyboards, mice, headsets and other gaming products. The first to-market item will be limited edition custom keycaps, which are already popular in the mechanical keyboard community. The Cozy Cat Keycap was developed by HyperX and voted on by its gaming community, and will be manufactured using environmentally friendly re-used powder nylon. It’ll sell for $19.99 starting later this month with support for Cherry MX stems....

The Core i5 661 performs very well in the SPECviewperf v10, Maya and 3dsMax tests, losing only to the Core i5 750 processor in each test. This meant that the Core i5 661 was just able to edge out the Phenom II X4 945, while it was around 40% faster than the Core 2 Quad Q6600. CINEBENCH R10 has been used to show both single and multi-threading performance. When using a single thread the 3....

DDR4-3000 offered a 29% boost in memory bandwidth for the Core i7-6700K when compared to the DDR4-2133 configuration taking the bandwidth to 33.6GB/s. The faster DDR4-3000 memory allowed for a 3.5% performance increase in the Hybrid encoding test taking the Core i7-6700K to 2.6fps and making it slightly faster than the 2.55fps of the 4790K. The extra memory bandwidth had little to no impact on the Cinebench R15 scores....

The AIDA64 Extreme Edition results contradict those provided by Sandra 2011. Here the Intel Core i5 2500K and Core i7 2600K processors are considerably faster than the triple-channel DDR3 Core i7 975 Extreme Edition and Core i7 920 processors. Also, like the Clarkdale Core i5 655K, the new Sandy Bridge Core i5 2500K and Core i7 2600K processors provide a greater throughput when measuring write performance opposed to read performance....

The Core i7-3960X was even more dominant in the SPECviewperf v11 Maya test, delivering 14fps making it 30% faster than the AMD FX-4170 and 41% faster than the Core i7-2600K. In CINEBENCH R11.5 the Core i7-3960X provides the same impressive OpenGL performance as the Sandy Bridge processors when paired with the GeForce GTX 580. The CPU performance on the other hand was amazing, blowing the older Sandy Bridge processors out of the water....

The chipmaker told Tom’s Hardware that its 12th Gen non-K processors were not designed for overclocking, adding that the company does not warranty the operation of these chips beyond their specifications. Intel further noted that altering clock frequency or voltage may damage or reduce the useful life of the CPU or other system components, and could reduce system stability and performance. Overclocker der8auer discovered a setting in the BIOS of his Asus motherboard when a non-K CPU was installed that unlocked BCLK (base clock) frequency manipulation....

The SSD 750 1.2TB reached 472MB/s in PCMark 8’s storage bandwidth test, 48% faster than the Plextor M6e 256GB. There was no real performance advantage for the SSD 750 in PCMark 8’s Battlefield 3 test. The SSD 750 was just 2% faster than the M6e 256GB in PCMark 8’s Photoshop test. The last PCMark 8 test we’re looking at is the Microsoft Word test and the SSD 750 Series couldn’t provide much of an advantage over the other SSDs tested....
