Researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of British Columbia recently published a study alleging that solid state drives can lead to double the carbon emissions of hard disk drives (HDDs). The study analyzes the carbon impact of different devices and components across their lifespans. The researchers admit that operating SSDs consumes less energy than HDDs, but claim that manufacturing SSDs results in far higher emissions. Most of an SSD’s carbon emissions have already occurred before anyone ever starts using it, assuming the manufacturing processes still rely primarily on fossil fuels....

The Force Engine (TFE), as the project is known, is now at version 1.0 after three years of development and fully supports Dark Forces. The project’s creator said the goal with Dark Forces was for TFE to replace DOSBox and the original executable, and to be compatible with both the vanilla levels and subsequent community mods. With TFE, you can play Dark Forces with high-resolution and widescreen support. Other enhancements include full mouselook support, an aiming reticle and an improved Boba Fett AI....

The extra threads of the Core i7 920 processor are no advantage when compared to the Core i5 750 in this game, but the additional memory capacity and bandwidth is. The Core i7 920 was 11% faster when comparing the clock for clock data at 3.70GHz which is quite significant. An older processor like the Core 2 Quad Q6600 suffers compared to the other CPUs tested, serving as a bottleneck to a high-end GPU such as the GeForce GTX 480....

Chen Ming-tong, director-general of Taiwan’s National Security Bureau, told lawmakers (via Bloomberg) that TSMC’s reliance on overseas companies and supplies for its operations means the facilities would be useless if China took over Taiwan. “If you understand the ecosystem of TSMC, the comments out there are unrealistic,” Chen said. “TSMC needs to integrate global elements before producing high-end chips. The Kaveri-based APUs have been shrunk down to the 28nm process and as a result consume considerably less power. In our Kaveri review, we found the part’s general execution to be slower than Intel’s offerings while consuming more power, but its integrated graphics core was significantly faster, exceeding some entry-level discrete graphics cards....

For those folks, test-driving Ubuntu via the LiveCD is certainly an option, but it comes with a couple major disadvantages: it’s a much slower experience (from boot-up to general usage), and all your changes and customizations are lost once the operating system is restarted. Besides a traditional installation, you can get around these limitations a few ways, one being with a virtual machine. Naturally, going that route means you’ll have to download and install VM software (we recommend VirtualBox, which is free and very easy to use), but this isn’t viable for everyone not least because of hardware constraints....

The FX-8320E delivered a dismal 37.6fps when running Company of Heroes 2 at 1366x768 with a GeForce GTX 980 – 43% slower than the Core i3-4360’s 66fps. The FX-8320E also struggled in Metro Redux at 13% slower than the i3-4360 and it was still 7% slower once overclocked. When testing Hitman Absolution the FX-8320E was 22% slower than the i3-4360 and it wasn’t until we overclocked it to 4.6GHz that it was able to match the Core i3....

A new International Data Corporation (IDC) report shows a Q2 2022 growth of 2.7 percent in global monitor shipments compared to Q2 2021. The numbers contrast with the current falling demand for PCs and other computer components, at least for now. In emerging markets outside China and Russia, growth exceeded 16 percent, contributing significantly to the global increase. The company that benefitted the most was HP, which saw a 30....
